Doculabs' Insights #16
AI as overlord or partner? We think partner. Plus, the past and future of process mining and 10 hurdles to clear for digital transformation.
Those of you who follow our Executive VP Marty Pavlik on LinkedIn that he’s been sharing videos recently. They are often of the “cute with a message” variety.
They’ve been fun and often make us stop and think about how we’re living our lives.
In a chaotic world, it’s good to be reminded that the world is still often a beautiful place full of kind and generous people.
While our focus here is devoted to the challenges surrounding intelligent automation, it can be easy to think “what’s the point.” We believe our work is important. We are proud of our client work. That work has improved their effectiveness through a better understanding and implementations of intelligent automation tools and strategies.
We’ve made a difference. That feels good.
As we are bombarded with often unpleasant news and images, it’s easy to sit back and think it doesn’t matter. It does.
Don’t despair. Focus on what you can do and control. And don’t forget to hug your loved ones close.
Thanks for reading and take care of yourself.

The Organization of the Future: Enabled by GenAI, Driven by People
This is a great outline for anyone who needs to understand how to bring generative AI into their organization. As with most technology, the decisions made around implementation and use of the technology will determine if you transform your business or just waste money and time. This point is particularly relevant:
“Given the technology’s potential to accelerate automation, senior leaders could counter employees’ prevailing fears of “replacement and loss” with messaging about gen AI’s potential for “augmentation and improvement”—and its ability to significantly enhance the employee experience. Imagine, for example, a world with fewer meetings and more time to think.” Read more.
The Impact of AI on the Future of Work: Embracing the Power of Collaboration
Will AI eliminate jobs? Change how work is done? Create new jobs and job categories? While still too early to predict the exact shape of looming AI-driven changes to work, the answer to those questions is “Yes.” This is an interesting look at preparing to bring AI into the workforce, and echoes the McKinsey article – AI is a partner. Deloitte: Many Organizations Don’t Know If They Have the Ethical Standards for Using Generative AI
Adoption is outpacing the development of ethical standards in generative AI. Data privacy is only one issue. Ethics isn’t just a philosophical question, there are hard costs associated with ethical missteps. Think of the potential reputational damage should patient health information be inadvertently shared. Read more.
OpenText and Hyland User Events: The Future and Back to the Future, Respectively
The potential future contours of the intelligent automation were visible at these two leading vendors’ recent events. OpenText has a history of growing through acquisitions, but the recent purchase of Micro Focus dwarfs previous big deals ($6 billion). The potential is there for OpenText to turn into another tech giant. The next year will be interesting as they bring in 300 MORE products into an already-convoluted set of products. More on OpenText here.
Hyland, interestingly, shows the continued importance of the basics even as the company develops use cases for its blockchain product. Hyland was one of the earliest ECM companies – the OnBase product combined workflow, document and records management, and capture functionality dating back to the late 90s. Hyland’s event focuses heavily on its user community. In conversations, it was evident that users don’t care what a technology is called, they care about the problems they have and how to solve them. The event was also a useful reminder that the definition of “automation” depends on the state of IT within an organization. After all, the winner of one Innovation Award was a customer that moved from an Access Database and paper documents to case management. Read more about Hyland CommunityLive.

Process Mining Industry Leaders Explore Its Past, Present, and Future
This conversation with Celonis Co-Founder and Co-CEO Alexander Rinke and the company’s Lead Transformation Analyst Rudy Kuhn is interesting and informative. One interesting nugget from Kuhn:
Kuhn: Yep. Just one last picture here. We often talk about process mining like x-ray. I think that's a great picture, because it really explains that you make visible what was hidden underneath before, you couldn't see. But honestly, I think that process mining should be more like a smart watch. It's continuously monitoring my performance. It's counting my steps, it's measuring my pulse. And if I don't move along or if I don't move enough, if I sit for too long, it'll remind me, "Hey, get up. Take some steps."
10 Hurdles That Can Keep You From Hitting Your Business Goals
Orgs with an agile digital infrastructure have 1.8 times higher earnings growth than those who delay digital transformation efforts. Is one, or more, of these 10 hurdles holding your organization back from reaping the rewards of digital transformation? These are the first two hurdles:
1. Security, compliance, and governance regulations continually change; making it hard to stay compliant and mitigate risk.
2. Siloed information.
Learn about the other 8 common hurdles. Read more.
